How do websites work before a CMS exists?

At the beginning of the internet, CMS did not exist. You had to manually create an HTML file and upload it through a FTP file to create a webpage. It was web1.0 at the beginning of the 80’s 

In 1993, Mosaic browser was able to insert images on static web page while the beginning of Server Side Includes SSI was able to create and separate Headers, Mian Page and Footer. Then you had to create a dynamic and interactive webpage.

Why did they create a CMS?

You want a website. You have to create HTML pages, transfer them through a FTP file, and integrate images on it. You have to code CSS file and embed them with the HTML to make it more interactive and design. Well all those steps take time, so much time. 

In order to streamline the process and make it more user-friendly, CMS was created

First Management system file to be created where designed with PHypertext Preprocessor Language (PHP), Active Server Pages (ASP) and java Server Pages (JSP). Those languages enable the power to create interactive dynamic web page and streamline the entire process. 

Based on this knowledge, IBM created the first CMS: FileNet 

Couple years later starting in 2003, the first CMS came on the market: Drupal (2001), WordPress (2003), Joomla (2005), Prestashop (2008). Proprietary CMS as well such as Shopify(2006), wix(2006), squarespace(2004)

Usually they come with template libraries, some free and some available by payment as well as their plugins.

  • High Level of Security: Usually CMS run by a company are secured because they do not want their customers to spend time fixing anything on the system

Proprietary CMS are perfect for business owners who do not want to spend time learning how it works, just need to be done. But If you want to develop it you will be limited
